Sungei Serangoon 09Jul23

From KH

It's Fall Migration Bird Census and I covered Sungei Serangoon as usual. The river, or what used to be a river before they dam it, is still good for waterbirds, like adult Black-crowned Night-Heron and juvenile Purple Heron.

Here are a couple of pied birds: Malaysian Pied-Fantail, male Oriental Magpie-Robin.

Adult Long-tailed Shrike.

Shy Common Tailorbird. Shyer male Common Iora.

Male Brown-throated Sunbird and male Ornate Sunbird sipping nectar from Brackishwater Mangrove Barringtonia racemosa flowers.

Ornate Sunbird nest.

Male Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker sipping nectar from?

White-spotted Slug Snake, usually found as roadkills, why? Here the foot-long body was scavenged by Carebara ants.

Common Snakehead with a cichlid.

Lots of other cichlids as well.

Nile Tilapias. Mozambique Tilapia

Mayan Cichlid

The canal was full of Hydrilla. Good hiding place for the fish?

Sengkang Riverside Park 02Aug20

From KH

This tiny Oriental House Rat first caught my attention when it ran in front of me on the pathway.

Then, out of nowhere, this Long-tailed Shrike dived at the rat but missed it! Look how small the rat is compared to the shrike!

The shrike tried looking but perhaps couldn't find the rat in the grass. It eventually flew off when a cyclist rode by. What a lucky mini rat!

After the short drama, I went around the park. This Common Iora nearly got away.

This Sunda Woodpecker didn't, but nor did it looked at me.

This Collared Kingfisher was more obliging.

Chocolate Pansy with tattered wing sipping nectar.
