A normal day back from lunch, kids running around the playground, but what happened next was far from normal.

First, we heard a lot of squealing. Then we saw a House Crow on the ground beside something. As we got closer, the crow flew off and I realized it's a Lesser Short-nosed Fruit Bat! Probably the first time the kids saw a bat, in the wild at least.

As the bat started to take off from the ground, the crow came back for another attempt. This went on a few times, and every time the bat would drop down to the ground and the kids will approach it, scaring the crow off to perch nearby.

Eventually, the bat, exhausted, took refuge at a low shrub, which is very open, I must say! Hope it managed to survive this ordeal!

Found a White-nest Swiftlet resting on a carpark ramp in Sengkang early this morning. It flew up and hit the wall on approach. Took some handphone shots before leaving it to rest. Came back 2 hours later and the bird was gone. No heavy tarsal feathering.

I did the Parrot Count at Sengkang Riverside Park today. Got 17 Rose-ringed Parakeets, 33 Red-breasted Parakeets and 8 Long-tailed Parakeets. Here are 3 Long-tailed Parakeets high up after 7pm.

Coincidentally, some folks were free-flying their pet macaws, including Red-and-green Macaw, Scarlet Macaw, Blue-and-yellow Macaws, and their hybrid.

I was attending to some matter near Sengkang Riverside Park and had some time to roam the park, but without my camera, only my smartphone. Initially, just the usual birds, such as this parent White-breasted Waterhen with its chicks.

Then, a distinctive bandit facial pattern at a tree fork caught my eyes. A Southern Palm Civet (Paradoxurus musanga) stirring from its snooze!

As the light faded, I saw a dark shadow flew up from the grass and back down. The characteristic chonk call sealed the ID, Large-tailed Nightjar. Not just one, but two of them.

In this phone video, the bird was flying around on the left of the screen.

I went to Sengkang Riverside Park in the afternoon today and surprisingly there were still quite a good amount of activities.

Many chickens, male and female.

Male Pink-necked Green-Pigeon, so handsome.

Zebra dove, so called for the black-and-white sides.

White-breasted Waterhen, too close!

I was shooting this Purple Heron and did not know there was a Yellow Bittern in the foreground until reviewing the photos!

Continuing Common Kingfisher at the same pond.

Rose-ringed Parakeet, long tail or short tail? Depends on angle.

Javan Myna: honey, will I grow fat with all these African Oil Palm?

Painted Jezebel caterpillar hanging out with a tiny springtail?

I went to Petai Trail late morning, but just the usual birds. Here's an unusual caterpillar.

After lunch, went to Sengkang Riverside Park. Again, just the usual birds.

Took a short walk around Sengkang Riverside Park. Got a female Common Kingfisher.

I went to Sengkang Riverside Park today.

Some of the migrants included this very vocal Brown Shrike, sometimes in cattail, sometimes in Alligator Flag.

And this Asian Brown Flycatcher.

Raptor-wise, only this Oriental Honey-Buzzard.

Resident-wise, Purple Heron trying to blend in with the grass.

Yellow-bellied Prinia not hiding in the reeds.

Female Common Flameback and adult Asian Glossy Starling sharing African Oil Palm fruit.

Javan Myna and Common Myna in comparison.

Seletar Dam, Sengkang Riverside Park 07Oct24

A quick check at Seletar Dam in the morning revealed only 1 wader, a Common Sandpiper. The only other migrants were 20 Little Egrets.

Next, Sengkang Riverside Park. The only migrants were 3 very vocal Asian Brown Flycatchers.

Yellow-vented Bulbul sitting on nest in flower pot on 22 Apr 2024.

Hope for better luck this round, but alas, it failed again. Same outcome as the previous one, but no eggs this time.

6 May 2024: just to document the clean, empty nest.

Morning at Sengkang Riverside Park turned up a surprising escapee: Black-headed Canary at the Floating Wetland.

A couple of Lesser Whistling-Ducks at the pond in the northern half.

Zebra Dove courting. Good luck, buddy!

After lunch, went back for a short afternoon session, no much. Only shutter count was Medium Egret.

Yellow-vented Bulbul nest in plant in a flower pot! Still no eggs on 31 Dec 2021, but on 3 Jan 2022, found 2 eggs inside! Alas, the nesting failed eventually as the pot was somehow rotated.

Empty nest on 30 and 31 Dec 2021.

2 eggs on 3 Jan and 7 Jan 2022.

28 Jan: abandoned, as would have hatched within 12-13 days (according to ebird).

17 Feb: still there.

Not scared off by this noisy Asian Koel, right??

I went to Sengkang Riverside Park and saw a pale morph Changeable Hawk-Eagle.

Seeing double. Right Sunda Woodpecker seemed to have sustained injury above eye. How many species of lichens are there??

White-breasted Waterhen strolling in a drain with beta-proteobacteria (the orangey stuff).
