Bedok, Pasir Ris Park 06Apr24

Danny and I went to Bedok to see the released/escaped Oriental/Eurasian Magpie, and it was there at the carpark, hanging out with Javan Mynas.

After filling it's stomach, it went to a tree in the Temple compound to rest.

Then, out of nowhere, a female Oriental Pied-Hornbill flew overhead. Perhaps signaling us to go Pasir Ris Park.

Crested Goshawk apparently completed nesting in this Rain Tree at Pasir Ris Park, but still hanging around.

Large-billed Crow harassing nesting Buffy Fish-Owl near pavilion.

Buffy Fish-Owl (indiv. 1) nesting in Bird's Nest Fern. Indiv. 2 on alert in response to the crow's harassment.

Indiv. 3 and indiv. 4 & 5 (juvenile on right) near Carpark D.

Collared Scops-Owl roosting at its usual spot.

Male Common Tailorbird caught a caterpillar and fed it to the juvenile (above).

Adult Black-naped Oriole also caught and devoured a caterpillar after removing the green gooey stuff.

Sungei Serangoon 09Jul23

It's Fall Migration Bird Census and I covered Sungei Serangoon as usual. The river, or what used to be a river before they dam it, is still good for waterbirds, like adult Black-crowned Night-Heron and juvenile Purple Heron.

Here are a couple of pied birds: Malaysian Pied-Fantail, male Oriental Magpie-Robin.

Adult Long-tailed Shrike.

Shy Common Tailorbird. Shyer male Common Iora.

Male Brown-throated Sunbird and male Ornate Sunbird sipping nectar from Brackishwater Mangrove Barringtonia racemosa flowers.

Male Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker sipping nectar from?

White-spotted Slug Snake, usually found as roadkills, why? Here the foot-long body was scavenged by Carebara ants.

Common Snakehead with a cichlid.

Lots of other cichlids as well.

The canal was full of Hydrilla. Good hiding place for the fish?

Sungei Serangoon 16Jul22

Today is Mid-year Bird Census. I covered Sungei Serangoon as usual.

Grey-headed Fish-Eagle used nest in albizia (Falcataria falcata).

Brahminy Kite couple perched on Sacred Fig (Ficus religiosa) admiring the morning glory (Ipomoea cairica) on White Leadtree (Leucaena leucocephala).

A very confiding immature White-breasted Waterhen.

Common Tailorbird foraging from Simpoh Air (Dillenia suffruticosa) to Shoebutton Ardisia (Ardisia elliptica)

Sooty-headed Bulbul adult with 2 juveniles foraging at Miagos Bush (Osmoxylon lineare)

Upper Seletar, Sungei Buloh 18Jun22

Danny and I went to Upper Seletar and saw many butterflies, mostly attracted to the Bandicoot Berries (Leea indica).

Common Bluebottles. Tailed Jay

Five Bar Swordtail. Rustic

Cruisers seemed to prefer Pagoda Flower instead.

Common Posy and ants sharing a stalk.

Wasp also attracted to the berries.

Flatid planthopper nymph. Variable Sentinel.

Common Hill Myna feeding on Bhesa paniculata fruits.

A drenched Crimson Sunbird.

Next, Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. Ruby-cheeked Sunbird couple were nesting. It was reported that this attempt eventually failed.

Apparently, they had had another failed nesting attempt previously under Burmese Fishtail Palm (Caryota mitis) several metres high.

Common Tailorbird was also busy nesting, in a stitched Simpoh Air leaf, less than 1 metre above ground. Interesting that the female was doing all the work in the short 10-15 mins of observation. She brought the material, perched at the stalk before entering the nest from behind, laid the material, and went looking for more.
