Upper Seletar, Sungei Buloh 18Jun22

Danny and I went to Upper Seletar and saw many butterflies, mostly attracted to the Bandicoot Berries (Leea indica).

Common Bluebottles. Tailed Jay

Five Bar Swordtail. Rustic

Cruisers seemed to prefer Pagoda Flower instead.

Common Posy and ants sharing a stalk.

Wasp also attracted to the berries.

Flatid planthopper nymph. Variable Sentinel.

Common Hill Myna feeding on Bhesa paniculata fruits.

A drenched Crimson Sunbird.

Next, Sungei Buloh Wetland Reserve. Ruby-cheeked Sunbird couple were nesting. It was reported that this attempt eventually failed.

Apparently, they had had another failed nesting attempt previously under Burmese Fishtail Palm (Caryota mitis) several metres high.

Common Tailorbird was also busy nesting, in a stitched Simpoh Air leaf, less than 1 metre above ground. Interesting that the female was doing all the work in the short 10-15 mins of observation. She brought the material, perched at the stalk before entering the nest from behind, laid the material, and went looking for more.

Hindhede, Dairy Farm 29May22

Danny and I started the day's birding at Hindhede Nature Park. Got the usual colugo and the not-usually-seen Brown Boobook.

Next, Dairy Farm Nature Park.

Immature male Crimson Sunbird starting to show some red on the throat.

Straw-headed Bulbul usually heard and can sometimes be seen.

Wagler Pit Viper securing itself with its tail for a good rest.

Insect life was in abundance.

Petai Trail, Thomson Nature Park 05Mar22

It's back to Petai Trail with Danny, but still no pale-legged. Got Lesser Mousedeer!

Saw this Southeast Asian Softshell Turtle at the same spot again.

Male Crimson Sunbird caught an insect? spider?

Definitely not this Malayan Five Ring or this Telephone Sylvan.

Nor this handsome fungus beetle larva or this male Two-striped Telamonia.

Heard there was an Oriental Scops-Owl at Thomson Nature Park, so that was where we went next.

The mulberry fruits were attracting frugivores, such as this Olive-winged Bulbul and this female Orange-bellied Flowerpecker.

Mulberry is a term used for various species of trees which do not even belong to the same family. This one is Pipturus argenteus, sometimes called White Mulberry, confusing with Morus alba. It is sometimes called Australian Mulberry, confusing with Hedycarya angustifolia. I love the name False Stinger, as it's unique and the species doesn't sting despite being in the Nettle family (Family Urticaceae).

Hampstead, SBWR 27Feb21

Danny and I started the day's birding at Hampstead Wetland as a Black-naped Oriole diffusus subspecies has been reported here recently, but it wasn't here today. Instead, Con informed us that there were a few at Sungei Buloh this morning. So we headed there straight away.

By the time we reached, diffusus was nowhere to be found. But here's an Ashy Minivet.

 

A Crested Goshawk high up.

Breeding season is in full swing for sunbirds: Crimson Sunbird chick in its nest and female Olive-backed Sunbird on her nest.

Dairy Farm Nature Park 26May18

Today, Con, Danny and I covered both the Singapore Quarry side and the Wallace Education Centre side of Dairy Farm Nature Reserve. JS joined us after our walk around Sg Quarry.

These are some of the fishes in the Singapore Quarry: Whitespot and Tilapia.

This Long-tailed Macaque was preening its young and ignoring us.

Some of the birds at the quarry included this White-crested Laughingthrush and this Little Spiderhunter.

This juicy caterpillar was at the Wallace Educuation Centre side.

Besides the fig trees, the False Curry Leaf Trees were attracting birds, like this Olive-winged Bulbul, to this area.

Female and immature male Crimson Sunbirds also come to the tree.

Pin-striped Tit-babblers were busy collecting nesting materials for a well hidden nest.
