Upper Seletar, Lower Peirce 21Aug21

From KH

Danny, JS & wife, and I went to Upper Seletar for a walk. Nothing too interesting, except for an adult and immature male Blue-winged Leafbirds.

After lunch, I went for a short walk at Lower Peirce. Nice to see a male Blue-eared Kingfisher making dives.

Here are a couple of insects: Traulia azureipennis grasshopper and a Telicota butterfly.

Dairy Farm, SBWR, Lower Peirce 18Jan14

From Con

As Danny has not seen the Sakhalin Leaf Warbler, we were back to Dairy Farm Loop in the morning. Today, the bird only showed up at 9 am. So Danny got his tick and we were off to Wallace Trail to search for the bird down slope. Except for a pair of noisy Little Spiderhunters, the trail was not very productive.

After lunch, we were off to Sungei Buloh. Con does not usually join us for afternoon birding, but he is doing the bird year and so we were all out rooting him! We managed to get the Grey-tailed Tattler, a juvenile Crow-billed Drongo and some of the usual suspects.

Final stop at Lower Peirce did not yield the bathing birds, but it was good to see a Blue-winged Pitta and a Cream-vented Bulbul.

Juvenile Rufous-bellied Eagle at BTNR:

From Con

This evening I went to Lower Peirce boardwalk at the y-junction from 6 pm to 7:20 pm. Nothing, no Short-tailed Babblers, in fact no birds at all ....., but finally at 7 pm a first winter male Siberian Blue Robin showed himself and bathed in the stream making his clicking noises. But I didn’t see any kingfishers. See Toh got a full adult male, but I didn’t see it.

From Danny

Refer to left and centre pic. (the same bird nearest to the juvenile), assumed to be the adult female and Owl 3, the bird furthest, the male Owl. I only manage to spot two subtle differences. Firstly, the assumed male has thick bold brownish bars (less white) on the upper breast (see #3). The female Owl has a pale ring around the face disk; 3 colors, rufous face, pale ring and brownish peripheral whereas the male has two colors without the pale ring.

Assumed to be female.

Assumed to be male.

Peirce Area 21May11

From KH

Danny, JS and I started off at Changi, but the rain caused us to retreat to other areas. The recent spate of releasees at Tampines Eco Trail led us to head there instead. However, when we reached, it was still drizzling.

We then moved on to Upper Peirce. At the carpark, a fruiting tree attracted a couple of forest Bulbuls: Cream-vented, Olive-winged and Red-eyed. Then a Pink-necked Green Pigeon chick caught Danny's attention. Through the bino, we could see that it still has its egg tooth, but before we can take any photo, we had to hop into our ride before it disappeared (we were hitching a ride).

At the pipeline, there was nothing noteworthy except for a flock of 3 Chestnut-bellied Malkohas. Soon it is time for lunch.

After lunch, while Danny was sending JS to the nearest MRT, I waited for him at the nearby Lower Peirce. Meanwhile, a confiding Short-tailed Babbler, a young Spiny Hill Terrapin and a displaying Common Flying Lizard kept me company. When Danny returned, I was trying to locate the calling Blue-eared Kingfisher, but to no avail. Soon the rain caught up with us again, so it was time to end the day's birding.

Earth Trail, Lower Peirce 13Feb11

From Danny

On Sunday, was at Mt Faber, saw a family of Scarlet-backed Flowerpeckers including a recently fledged juvenile with flesh color mandibles feeding at a roadside tree. Timely reminder of breeding season and to look for nesting. It was a sunny morning with all 3 common sunbirds seen, two AB Flycatchers but no other FC.

For raptors, a Chinese Goshawk appeared from nowhere to attack a group of swiftlets but missed. One OHB was seen thermalling high up. While in the canopy of Earth Trail, a CHE flew over flushing pigeons and bulbuls.

In the late afternoon went to LP boardwalk found Y junction barricaded for upgrading. Saw the BE Kingfisher at its usual perch. Birds seen bathing were Siberian blue Robins, WR Shama, heard ST Babblers but no show.

Lower Peirce, Marine Parade, AMK, SBWR 10-11Apr10

From Yamane

I report about the morning issue. At the junction of Costus Trail & Oncospermum Trail, I found the cage that White-rumped Shama was in. At first I could not understand the status. When I took the photos with flashlight, a Singaporean guy said "Don't injure the bird!" I try to confirmed the cage is his one. He accepted it. He said he is seeking another White-rumped Shama there. After I left there, I tried to check him again and went back to there. Already he was starting to leave there by his car. Oh! he had another cage. But I could not confirm it whether the bird was in. I could only check his car number. My friend of Singapore said he was a poacher. I worry about Shama of Lower Peirce Boardwalk.

As you know, I could see only the Shama in cage. I hope the security of Shama & other birds.

Lower Peirce 6-7Mar10

From Yamane

I visit Lower Peirce Board Walk on Saturday morning and Sunday morning.

BUFFY FISH OWL: Juvenile
BLUE-WINGED PITTA

Unfortunately, the shy BLACK-BACKED KINGFISHER never appeared. Because too many person visit there in weekend. And I'm happy I could meet NPS members and NSS members.

BTW, Willie gave me some photos of Pitta. Now I show you it under his permit.

And I attached another photo that I took the photographers around the Pitta. :-)

Lower Peirce 27Feb10

From GC

Was at Lower Peirce Sat evening. There were some photogs at the straight stretch looking for BW Pitta and BBKF. At the Y-junction, there was a BBKF that came to bathe and a 1st winter Siberian Blue Robin male. Around 7pm, the BEKF showed up for a few minutes to shower. It looks like a male. No sign of Buffy. It did not help that a troop of macaques moved through the big trees.

Black-backed Kingfisher.

Lower Peirce 07Feb10

From KH

I was at Lower Peirce this evening. Initially, I was patiently waiting at the corner of the Y junction for action. The same cast of Olive-winged Bulbuls, Cream-vented Bulbuls, Short-tailed Babblers, a female Siberian Blue Robin and a BBKF put on the usual show.

The only difference today was, at the reservoir side of the Y junction, a pair of BEKFs were putting up a good show. A female (red bill and orange ear coverts) was sitting on the branch for the whole 30 mins I was with it (5:30 - 6 pm)! The male (mostly black bill and blue ear coverts) dropped by twice to feed the female, which would become very excited and started calling. By the time I left at 6 pm, the female was still sitting on the branch!

Peirce Area 06Feb10

From Danny

A pair of adult Chestnut-winged Babblers were spotted on 6 Feb 2010 at Nee Soon Swamp responding to playback of call, note not the song, possibly an engaged pair. It's time of the year to prepare for breeding. From video, notice how the babblers call out thru the gullet air sags exposing the white patches. At end of video when both babblers were side by side, the bird on the left had relatively larger white patches & more active, likely a male.

Here's the Dark-sided Flycatcher at Mousedeer Trail.

From KH

The first interesting creatures at the Nee Soon Pipeline were non-avian. There was a Malayan Brown Snake in the paddle. Can't really tell the length, but it's definitely more than 2 feet.

The other creature of interest here was the nymph of a Flatid Bug.

A Female Siberian Blue Robin

and Short-tailed Babblers are also part of the bathing party.

Lower Peirce, Springleaf, Singapore Quarry, Pulau Punggol 23Jan10

From KH

Danny and I went to Lower Peirce hoping to see the Blue-eared Kingfisher, but ended up spotting a Black-backed Kingfisher feeding instead. Of course not forgetting the Short-tailed Babblers, which were heard singing their song during dawn, and the other birds, like the flamebacks and racket-tailed drongos.

After prata at Casuarina, we headed to Springleaf. 4 species of raptors we sighted here: 1 Crested Serpent-eagle, 1 adult Grey-headed Fish-eagle, 1 Black Baza and at least 2 WBSEs.

There were >20 Duarian Starlings mixed with large flocks of AG Starlings, >5 Thick-billed Green-pigeons mixed with PNGPs, a Tiger Shrike, a pair of large-billed crows, a coppersmith barbet, dollarbirds, bee-eaters, lesser coucals, yb prinias, a common sandpiper and a purple heron.

As it was too early for lunch, we went to Singapore Quarry. After parking, immediately an Asian Palm-swift caught our attention. When we reached the quarry itself, guess who was already there since the morning? Martii! There were 2 CHEs calling and the only raptor we saw here was an adult Grey-headed Fish-eagle. The Little Grebes (at least 6) seemed to be more accustomed to humans now and came a little closer.

Little Grebe ©Tan KH

Also present were 2 Straw-headed Bulbuls - 1 heard and 1 seen. An interesting phenomenon here were that the forest reptiles were out having a siesta along the trail. We saw an adult Paradise Tree Snake on a railing and 2 Clouded Monitors.

After lunch, we were off to Pulau Punggol. Without fail, a pale morph Booted Eagle was present. Danny finally managed to get a relatively good shot of this species perched! If you look closely at the gizzard of the raptor in flight, it's actually full. It must be resting after a sumptuous meal.

The other raptors here were 1 japonensis Peregrine Falcon, 1 dark morph CHE, at least 4 WBSEs and at least 4 Brahminy Kites.
