Pasir Ris Park 28Feb26

Danny and I went to Pasir Ris Park today.

A Himalayan Cuckoo was first reported here on 19 Feb. Glad that it was still around after more than a week.

Here, eating an Asian Weaver Ant queen.

Poor cuckoo was shouted at not only by the locals, like these Swinhoe's White-eyes, and sunbirds.

But also migrants like this Yellow-browed Warbler, and also Asian Brown Flycatcher!

Also around was an adult Hodgson's Hawk-Cuckoo. Similarly, it was shouted at by white-eyes and Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker.

All these happening in the vicinity of the Crested Goshawk nest in a Rain Tree.

OHB also seen in the vicinity.

Another cuckoo, a Square-tailed Drongo-Cuckoo, was having a more peaceful time.

Female Brown-throated Sunbird was too busy sipping nectar from these pink flowers.

Female Ornate Sunbird was also busy sipping nectar from these light pink flowers.

The Oriental Pied-Hornbill couple was also too busy preening themselves.

I went to Coney Island for a morning walk.

Surprised find: an adult Hodgson's Hawk-cuckoo.

A flock of about 30 White-shouldered Starlings were found feeding in the casuarina trees.

So were these Red-breasted Parakeets.

A Common Tailorbird also like the casuarina trees.

This male Olive-backed Sunbird was displaying aggressively to the nearby female.

A huge Baya Weaver nest!

Punggol Waterway Park 30Mar-01Apr18

This Hodgson's Hawk-cuckoo was very uncooperative, hiding deep in the wooded area.

The Coppersmith Barbets put on a better show. The male brought her a fruit to entice her into position. Smart bird!

Other birds present were the Common Hill Myna and Red-breasted Parakeet.

At Bidadari today, the Indian Cuckoo (left) and the Hodgson's Hawk-cuckoo (right).

At Bidadari this morning, there were two Large Hawk-cuckoos, one in more adult plumage and the other in more juvenile plumage (perhaps the same one seen over the weekend). There was also a male Indian Cuckoo and a Hodgson's Hawk-cuckoo (but with more juvenile plumage than the one seen over the weekend). So the cuckoos really seem to passing through Singapore with Bidadari as a pit stop.

On 29 Jan, Con got an immature Hodgson's Hawk-cuckoo.

On 31 Jan, Danny reported that the Hooded Pitta was around, so was the Black-backed Kingfisher.

Poyan, Punggol 12Feb11

Con, Danny, JS and I started off at Poyan and managed to drive in today. Highlights:

1) a male Siberian Stonechat moulting into breeding plumage
2) 3 cuckoos seen (1 friendly immature Hodgson's, 2 Indian, 1 male Violet), 2 more heard (Rusty-breasted, Little Bronze)
3) 3 WPs (1 Banded, 2 Laced, Sunda heard)
4) 2 parakeets (>5 Rose-ringed, >10 Red-breasted)
5) Red Junglefowl (2 male, 1 female)
6) a pair of CHE (1 pale, 1 dark) at their nest
7) about 10 Black Bazas scattered around the area, each time seeing 1-3 birds.
8) Straw-headed Bulbul (2 seen, 2 heard), Lineated Barbet (1 seen, many heard)
9) >5 Ashy Minivets, 1 Brown Shrike, >10 PB Starlings

In the afternoon, Danny and I went to Punggol Point. You can now walk to Coney Island and into the old Punggol Grassland.

1) 1 Osprey
2) 2 WBSE
3) 2 Brahminy Kite

Last stop at Punggol East, opposite Halus. No Jerdon fly-by. Only WBSE swapping down for small fish, BWK in grassland, Oriental Reed Warblers skulking in grass and a flock of ~40 PB Starlings fly-by thrice.

Danny and I started at Jurong Lake for the Malayan Night-heron, but the bird did not show. Then we headed for the Kranji Resort and SBWR - nothing noteworthy here. After lunch, it was Bidadari. We got 1 Black Baza, 1 Chestnut-winged Cuckoo, 2 Hodgson's Hawk-cuckoos (1 adult, 1 juv), 2 Asian Drongo-cuckoos, 1 1^st winter male Mugimaki Flycatchers, 2 Asian Brown Flycatchers and 1 Asian Paradise-flycatcher.

SBG, Pulau Punggol 30Jan09

On checking up references, the cuckoo (at Pulau Punggol) was a Hodgson's Hawk-cuckoo with pale tertials and thinner subterminal bar at tail. As for the drongo, twice sighted but quite a distance, need photo to confirm red eyes for id.

Btw the Blue-winged Pitta at SBG is enjoying CNY with large supply of mealworms with the Red-legged Crake joining in for the spoils - guess birds, birders and photographers will put on weight.

Bidadari 28-31Dec08

On Sun 28 Dec, I had some time off from my chauffeur duty and headed for Bidadari for the first time this season. Sure enough an immature Hodgson's Hawk-cuckoo was there, so was 3 Black Bazas.

Non-avian creatures include a Black Cobra (more than 1 foot long), as well as a Variable Squirrel.

On Tue 30 Dec, after recieving the Malayan Night-heron report from KC, I was there from 5:30 - 6:30 pm. Jonathan, Jimmy Chew, Ashley and an Eric was also there, but the MNH was a no-show. However, they were there earlier and photographed a perched Buteo buteo, a juv Crow-billed Drongo and an Indian Cuckoo.

While I was there, I saw a Drongo Cuckoo and another Hodgson HC. The latter was a subadult, different from the immature on Sun.
