2. (new) Sungei Buloh: 1 Stork-billed Kingfisher (heard)
3. Tuas: 2 Barn Owls (1 adult, 1 juv), 1 immature Hodgson's Hawk Cuckoo, 1 Black Bittern (reported by Low CH), 2 White-shouldered Starlings, 3 Wood Sandpipers.

Marina Barrage 17Jul11

I got a tip from Lim Kim Seng yesterday while on the boat ride. There is a Barn Owl who is a regular at Marina Barrage. He sleeps there during the day. Go to the water feature where the children play; and look up. He will be sleeping on the pipes. I just went with a handheld camera and took a couple of snapshots, I didn’t wake him up. The parents were quite interested to point the owl out to their children.

The Barn Owl is present on all 5 continents, but absent in Japan.

There is no entrance fee, it’s free.

Barn owl encounter from Sree

Well the OWL story does not end there.

On Monday night my wife had to give a seminar in town so Varun (my son) and I dropped her off and headed to the Tanjong Rhu site for the Barn Owl and arrived there at about 7.15 pm. When we got there, we went to the same spot that we did previously and were again disappointed not to see any signs of the Barn Owls.

We headed back to the road and decided to explore the opposite site. Lo and behold, just past the road on the rafters were a pair of Barn Owls. Varun did the honours of holding my light as I took several pictures all from the pavement beside the road. This was his first sighting of a Barn Owl. My first night time sighting of a Barn Owl (in SG) as well.

Here are two pictures, of the pair. They are cropped but you should be able to see that it is these corners/rafters that they prefer to roost.
