Coney Island 21Mar20

From KH

Danny and I went to Coney Island and was rewarded with a Large Hawk-cuckoo, albeit a skittish one.

This was then followed by some of the common resident birds, such as this female Laced Woodpecker and this female Oriental Magpie-robin.

A surprised find was this Common Tailorbird with his nest up on a tree.

Non-avian creatures included this crab, butterfly and bug.

Jurong Lake 01Feb20

From KH

The target bird today was the Brahminy Starling that was reported a few days ago. The starling appeared briefly on the figging tree at the Japanese Garden entrance, before flying to this bare tree. I got it but Danny missed it by seconds!

At the figging tree, there were much activities. We recorded 5 species of cuckoos here!

Rusty-breasted Cuckoo, typical morph and hepatic morph, both with yellow eye ring

Square-tailed Drongo-cuckoo with caterpillar in mouth

Thermaling overhead were these Oriental Honey-buzzards, both pale and dark morphs.

As well as these Asian Openbills.

Meanwhile, this Yellow Bittern was waiting for fish at the lake.

And finally, a sleepy Buffy Fish-owl to round it up.

There was also a small flock of introduced Crimson-rumped Waxbills.

Some Red-breasted Parakeets.

There was a male Red Collared-dove mixed in with a flock of Spotted Doves at Serangoon Tidal Gate.

Fort Siloso 30Dec17

From KH
The tree that started the craze: Ficus superba.

The guardian of the tree: Crested Goshawk.

An adult Large Hawk-cuckoo was still around.

And then there were TWO (Asian Emerald-cuckoos)! Unbelievably, this bird not only stayed long enough for Danny and JS to tick them off today, but it brought a kaki! Con and I came today just because it's the current hot spot.

Then, a first winter male Blue-and-white Flycatcher caught JS's eyes. It also came for the tussock moth caterpillars.

The star bird at the Skywalk itself: Yellow-browed Warbler.

The introduced Chinese Hwamei was singing its heart out.

So was the introduced Indian Peacock.

The resident Brahminy Kite (top) and Large-billed Crow also came to take a look.

One of several House Swifts zoomed past (left), while the Pink-necked Green-pigeons hung out with the Asian Glossy Starlings.

There were a bunch of Asian Glossy Starlings at the Skywalk.

A few Tanimbar Corellas.

And some of the Yellow-vented Bulbuls (left) and Black-naped Orioles.

Fort Siloso 24Dec17

From KH
Following the report of an Asian Emerald Cuckoo at Fort Siloso on 23 Dec, I went here and the bird was still there!

When we first saw it, it was high up. Then, it came a little lower.

This one shows its emerald wings. A flight shot before it went into hiding.

Other cuckoos include this adult Large Hawk-cuckoo.

This immature.

And these adult (left) and immature Indian Cuckoo.

The reason for the gathering of cuckoos: an outbreak of tussock moth caterpillars on a bare Ficus superba tree.

At times, the cuckoos were chased off by the nesting Crested Goshawks.

The juvenile from the previous session also came back to take a look.

A Chinese (top) and a Japanese Sparrowhawk came by, as well.

Other migrants include a Yellow-browed (left) and an Arctic Warbler.

Other birds include the following residents, which were taken at the Skywalk.

"Why do they get to stay in the house, honey??" said the female Oriental Pied Hornbill (right) to the male.

Oriental White-eye

Red-whiskered Bulbuls

Asian Glossy Starlings

Finally, some free-ranging Indian Peafowls (male left, female right) to round up the list.
