Mt Kinabalu 06Jun18

From KH
Artistic shot of a male Crimson-headed Partridge!

Bornean Whistling-thrush juvenile begging the adult for food.

Chestnut-crested Yuhina nest - the bird was seen flying out a few times, and there were two eggs in the nest.

It was nice to see a juvenile Dark Hawk-cuckoo.

This Mountain Leaf-warbler was collecting nesting materials.

These female (left) and male Temminck's Sunbirds were minding their own business.

This Indigo Flycatcher was banded, like some of the other birds here.

A quick check at the Whitehead's Spiderhunter flower did not get us the rare bird, but a Jentink's Squirrel instead.

Halo!

Mt Kinabalu 04Jun18

From KH

With Alim's tip, we managed to see 2 endemic Everett's Thrushes near Silau-Silau Hut at about 6am.

The Bornean Treepie is a common endemic, very noisy, but usually high up.

This endemic Bornean Whistler caught a stick insect!

While this endemic Bornean Stubtail was hiding in the undergrowth under low light condition...

Chestnut-hooded and Sunda Laughingthrushes were seen, but no sign of the Bare-headed Laughingthrush.

This Chestnut-hooded Laughingthrush was removing the green gooey stuff from the caterpillar before swallowing it.

Here's a comparison between the Bornean (left) and Plume-toed Swiftlets.

How many bands can a Chestnut-crested Yuhina wear?

How about a Black-capped White-eye?

And Grey-throated Babbler?

This pair of Little Pied Flycatchers were apparently still building nest. The female (left) was carrying nesting material.

The juvenile Snowy-browed Flycatcher (left) has already fledged, and the Indigo Flycatcher came down to check us out.

The other common birds included:

Female Temminck's Sunbird. Sunda Bush Warbler.

Ochraceous Bulbul

Hair-crested Drongo. Ashy Drongo stigmatops subspecies.

Some of the squirrels here included the Brooke's Squirrel and the Bornean Mountain Ground Squirrel.

We had another Trilobite Beetle today.

There was a blackish caterpillar and another stick insect.

Mt Kinabalu 03Jun18

From KH

Today, we had Alim as our guide. He is the go-to person for birding beyond the Timpohon Gate. Our target was the endemic Friendly Bush Warbler, which we failed miserably at, as it was simply not calling... What an unfriendly bird!

Nevertheless, we did have a few of the endemic Fruithunters. This one was having what else but fruit for breakfast.

The endemic Mountain Black-eyes were very common up here. They really like these flowers.

The endemic Mountain Wren-babblers came in small flocks, and made very distinctive calls.

Another endemic - Bornean Whistling-thrush, right at Timpohon Gate.

This endemic Bornean Green Magpie was also at the gate.

The other common endemics are the Chestnut-hooded Laughingthrushes and the Chestnut-crested Yuhinas.

Alim brought us to a known nesting site for the endemic Bornean Swiftlet and sure enough a bird was sitting on the single nest. This species is easily confused with the Plume-toed Swiftlet, which is also present here.

The endemic subspecies of Flavescent Bulbul, the Pale-faced Bulbul, were not only far away, but also looking away...

Below are some of the non-endemic montane birds here.

Indigo Flycatcher. Female Little Pied Flycatcher feeding juvenile.

Sunda Bush Warbler. Mountain Leaf Warbler.

Mountain Tailorbird. White-throated Fantail.

There was a nice Trilobite Beetle larva showing well.

We also saw nice red pitcher plants.

What else to do at the end the day but to enjoy the sunset.
