SBWR 30Jun18

From KH

After Kranji Marsh, we went to Sungei Buloh for some late morning fun. The birds were not so active at this time of the day, but the dragonflies were. Purple, red, yellow, you name it.

Oriental Blue Dasher (Brachydiplax chalybea)

Common Redbolt (Rhodothemis rufa)

Yellow-barred Flutterer (Rhyothemis phyllis)

These Flat-tailed Geckos showed how varied their patterns can be.

While this Estuarine Crocodile was enjoying a good bask in the late morning sun.

Many of the Common Fruit Bats were nursing, like this one showing how you can drink milk upside-down!

Finally, what's a birding trip without any photo of birds, or a used bird nest in this case. Here's a used nest of the Copper-thoated Sunbird.

Kranji Marsh 30Jun18

From KH

Con, Danny and I went birding at Kranji Marsh today.

First, a Yellow-bellied Prinia with a ring was busy collecting nesting material.

Then at the Tower, this Paradise Tree Snake kept us on our toes. One moment, it was on the beam, next moment elsewhere!

The tree beside the tower harboured a huge Giant Honey Bee nest!

While a Large-tailed Nightjar slumbered on.

On the way out, a Green Crested Lizard showed us how long its tail was.

Beware the Red-wattled Lapwing bomber!

Panti 23Jun18

From KH

Today, Con, Danny, Rob Arnold and I went to Panti after a long hiatus. One of our targets today was the blue morph Rufous-winged Philentoma, and sure enough he was around, so was his mate.

A nearby tree seemed to be a woodpecker magnet. We had a couple of White-bellied Woodpeckers, a banded Woodpecker and a Buff-rumped Woodpecker, all visiting it!

At another spot, Checker-throated Woodpeckers showed well, so did a male Red-naped Trogon.

A couple of bulbuls - Black-headed Bulbul and juvenile Buff-vented Bulbul.

Can you tell this is a White-bellied Erpornis?

And this, a Moustached Babbler?

A faraway Dark-throated Oriole didn't make things easy either.

Luckily, the female Blue-winged Leafbird and male Orange-bellied Flowerpecker were more forthcoming, mainly due to the roadside fruit.

Crocker Range 13Jun18

From KH

After some overnight driving, we reached Crocker Range in time for the sunrise.

First stop was Rafflesia Information Centre. Guess what, it's closed again. The first bird that got us excited were the endemic Bornean Bulbuls.

The Ashy Bulbuls were also here.

So were Chestnut-crested Yuhinas and a Grey-throated Babbler.

Then, an endemic Mountain Barbet showed up, but it was high and backlit...

An endemic Bornean Barbet also came, suddenly, but it also went suddenly, so no photos...

Here's a pretty spider.

And a pair of Little Cuckoo-doves (male left, female right).

Then, there were some commotions - some Bar-winged Flycatcher-shrikes (left) were attacking a male Black-and-crimson Oriole.

Some other birds also came.

Maroon Woodpecker. Indigo Flycatcher

Male Bornean Leafbird

Moving on to Gunong Alab Resort, we had our mee soup ayam and photographed the nesting swiftlets. Depending who you talk to, these would be Plume-toed Swiftlets or the endemic Bornean Swiftlets.

After mee soup, we drove up the 2-km track to the power substation. There wasn't much going on, but we did get intel that Whitehead's Spiderhunters visit the trees at the substation when they flower. This marked the end of our Sabah adventure and it was time to head to KK Airport.
