Marina East, Telok Blangah 22Jan22

From KH

Danny and I went to Marina East today. Just the usual suspects in the marsh.

At the breakwater, we had fun with a bunch of plovers.

1 male (left) and 1 female-type White-faced Plovers

2 male (left) and 2 female-type Kentish Plovers

The bushes beside the marsh harboured many Julia Heliconians, an introduced species.

I was too engrossed in shooting the butterflies that I didn't realize that there were Carrhotus spider and mating Plumed Moths at the edge of my photos!

The bushes were made up of Causonis sp., Vigna sp. and Earpod Wattles (Acacia auriculiformis).

Of course, what we were stepping on were the usual Broadleaf Carpetgrass.

Finally, we went to Telok Blangah Hill to see the Grey-faced Buzzard that was wintering there and sure enough, it was still enjoying its sentry duty on the lamppost.

Halus, Changi 9-10Feb11

From Con

9 Feb Halus and Changi

Here are my shots of the Jerdon's Baza the morning.  Gee at 7:22 am there really was not much light.  The wing on the left got a bit more light and so the exposure is a bit better.

Anyway, it was nice seeing this rare visitor, although this year, almost reaches pest bird status !

Changi was good, we had a permit and got in without any difficulty nor any hassle.  There were lots of waders, hundreds of sand plovers, some kentish, greys and about 7 white faced.  I got some more pictures, although not terrific, but still recognizable.

Bad news however, the sandy track along the coast beyond the sand bar is washed out.  Must have been some storms at high tide and the coastline is eroded away such that a normal SUV type car can no longer get through, so you can not get to the red earth or beyond.

A male White-faced Plover on the right and a female (note very restricted colouration on ear coverts) on the left.

10 Feb Halus

I was at Lor Halus this morning, too bad, no Jerdon's although there was the usual flight of about 19 Black Bazas.
Changi 19Jan11

From Con

Just catching up with the Dec 19th outing to Changi Cove with Subaraj, Simon and Richard Carden.

By the time we got into the cove and I got my camera out the the car and down to the beach it was already quite late.  I shot from about 11:20 to 12:15, so the light was already rather harsh.

I used a 600mm lens with 2x TC and a 1.5 crop factor camera body for an effective focal length of 1800mm which in terms of magnification is 36X.  All these pictures are 50% crop so that makes the magnification 72X definitely within scope range!  But the images surely suffer a loss of sharpness due to variety of factors that always plague such high magnification.

Our group counted 9 White-faced Plovers.  My goal was to photograph the closest one so I could get some reasonable detail.  I wound of crawling on the sand to get closer.  We never disturbed the flock and the never flew.  I might have gotten a bit closer still, but the group was waiting and getting anxious to go, so we left.  This sort of thing is best done along or with people who aren't hungry.

I'm showing all my shots of one particular individual bird next to what I believe is a Kentish Plover.  This serves to illustrate two points the the Bakewell / Kennerley papers ... that the White-faced Plover is slightly larger than a Kentish Plover, and the legs are pale and pinkish.

Changi, Clementi 31Jan09

From KH
CC today was quite interesting with 12 species of waders (13 if White-faced Plover is a distinct species). Most of the species were at the sandbar. There were also 7 species of raptors and a few other birds. Surprisingly, there was not a single tern.

We were quite lucky today, as we were allowed into this last coastal wader haven in Singapore by a single wave of Danny's hand to an extremely friendly guard. Our luck were to persist when a defender drove passed us without taking down our names and Con's car plate no.!! And then there are the 88 Grey Plovers to round it all up. We really should go buy toto.

Waders

1) Ruddy Turnstone: 5
2) Sanderling: 4
