I went Johor forest birding with Con and Danny this weekend.

It was babblers galore.

Fluffy-backed Tit-babblers duetting. Striped Wren-babbler singing.


Grey-headed Babbler


Short-tailed Babbler

The other birds here included:

Purple-naped Spiderhunter

White-bellied Woodpecker

Male Grey-rumped Treeswift

Whiskered Treeswift: female and male

This female Grey-and-buff Woodpecker stayed high up.

Similarly, this Green Imperial-pigeon flew high up.

Meanwhile, this Chestnut-bellied Malkoha was hiding in the trees.

While, this Whiskered Treeswift chose a high perch.

Fortunately, this photogenic Green Broadbill perched nicely for us.

Mr and Mrs Blue-winged Leafbird came low too.

One of the rarest babblers in Malaysia - Grey-breasted Babbler.

The Sooty-capped Babbler is much more common.

Another bird with a grey breast - Grey-breasted Spiderhunter.

This Hairy-backed Bulbul gave us some hint why it's so called.

This male Orange-bellied Flowerpecker also came low.

This Rufous-tailed Shama stayed in the mid-storey.

A couple of Wild Piglets stayed out in the open for a long time. Did something bad happen to the parents?

Rifle Range 09Aug11

This photo is from my iPhone through Doreen's scope.

The bird is in one of three or four tall dead trees on the path up to the reservoir. Park at the end of Rifle Range Rd, walk on the Rifle Range Link path, and when you get to the junction instead of turning right to Jelutong Tower, turn left and walk up the spillway towards the reservoir.

The Grey Wagtail is in the spillway, he was there this morning but I just missed him. The Whiskered Treeswift is in one of the tall dead trees, no favorite, you have to check them all. There are three or four.
According to The Avifauna of Singapore, there have been no confirmed sightings since 1999. Several birders were there including Doreen and Kim Chuah, it was a tick for both of them. Apparently the bird was first seen by Ju Lin during the mid-year bird census and has been there more or less continuously. Just one bird, a female.
