A female Mangrove Blue-Flycatcher was first reported along Sungei Api Api on 30 Sep. Danny and I went there today, so did many others. She was quite well hidden, can catch glimpses, but hard to photograph.

I went to Pasir Ris Park today for the male Mangrove Blue Flycatcher and it was still there.

Spotted Wood-Owl had another successful season. Parent bird standing guard above chick.

Crested Goshawk also had a successful season. This is the juvenile.

Collared Kingfisher just hanging around.

Lots of chicken in front of Rain Trees.

Pulau Ubin 04Jun10

I finally went this morning. I waited at the appointed spot for about 30 minutes. I thought I heard him (the male Mangrove Blue-flycatcher singing far away. Finally I tried playback briefly and he came right in without delay. He was super close. I had to back up to focus! Got some okay pictures. He caught a nice caterpillar. So we both did well. He stayed around for a couple of minutes but kept flitting from one branch to another.

There was also a Mangrove Pitta calling in several locations and moving around. But he wouldn't respond to playback.

There was a Great-billed Heron on the Chek Jawa flats, tide was low, but he was too far away for photography.

I waited an hour and tried playback again. This time no response, but I hadn't heard him singing nearby either. So perhaps he was far away or just taped out.

Pulau Tekong 31May - 03Jun10

After a gruelling period of 4 days in Tekong, I am back to modern civilisation, back to the company of mynas and more mynas. At Tekong, it was the White-rumped Shama that were everywhere - on the road and one even came up to my instructors for food!

Thrash birds aside, I was fortunate to hear my first Mangrove Blue-flycatcher and see my first Black-naped Monarch on Tekong. I was expecting to see the monarch in the dense forest of Tekong but saw it at the shrubby trees by the track.

Other noteworthy sightings were more Green Imperial-pigeons and plenty of the brilliantly coloured Purple-throated Sunbird.

Pulau Ubin 22May10

Today's trip to Ubin was great. Both male and female Mangrove Blue-flycatchers were present, so were >10 photogs.

JS also managed to confirm and count the waders present:

• 1 Bar-tailed Godwit
• 3 Whimbrels
• 11 Grey Plovers
• 5 LSPs

Alfred Chia later confirmed that this extends the late date for the godwit by 2 days (the last late date was also at Chek Jawa in 2008).

1 unid accipter was seen flying at the canopy level near the information counter at Chek Jawa. JS saw the bird twitching its tail. Unfortunately, no observation was made using the binoculars.

Of course not forgetting 1 GB Heron, 3 OP Hornbills, woodpeckers (Rufous, Laced, Goldenback), sunbirds (Purple-throated, Brown-throated, Crimson), cuckoos calling (Plaintive, Little Bronze), terns (BN, Little), bulbuls (Straw-headed calling, OW, YV), wbse, brahminy kite, magpie robin, shama calling, junglefowl calling, fantails, etc.
