Changi Village, SBG 10Dec10
From Con
I drove out to Changi Village to see Yamane this morning. The first barrier at LP149 was open, but the second barrier was locked. Still it looked like it would be possible to drive around the second barrier around the small trees. There was construction equipment at the canal entrance along the road to SAFYC, so that entrance was not possible today.
Late this afternoon I received a tip that the Black Bittern which has been posted on NPX and NPS is at Botanic Gardens, Ginger Garden in the largest of the two pools. I went over from about 5pm to 6pm this afternoon. The light was not very good, but the bittern was there.
The plumage of this bittern is a bit richer than the one in 2006, the guesses are that this one is an adult and the one in 2006 was a juvenile, or perhaps male versus female plumage. Will have to study this a bit further.
Anyway, this bird is something Yamane might want to see before he leaves. I may go tomorrow morning if the light is good. Anyway, the bird should be there all day. I see that it is not native to Japan, but is a rare or accidental summer visitor to Honshu.
