Crocker Range 02Jun18

From KH

Con, Danny and I went birding in Sabah this June. Currently, Air Asia is the only airline that has direct flight from Singapore to Kota Kinabalu (KK). From KK, we drove to Crocker Range for some mid-altitude morning birding. Today was misty in the mountains, so we had our breakfast at the Gunung Alab Substation. There were many white-bellied swiftlets nesting under the eaves.

After nice warm breakfast, we went to the nearby Rafflesia Information Centre, which is closed even though the signboard says it was supposed to open at 8 am. No matter, birding can very well be done along the road outside the centre.

The first endemics we saw were Bornean Leafbirds. In fact, a family of male, female and juvenile.

The next endemic to show its was the common Chestnut-hooded Laughingthrush. This one was a tad shy.

Other endemics seen were a male Black-sided Flowerpecker, a Bornean Treepie and a flock of about 10 Chestnut-crested Yuhinas.

Other animals here include this red skipper butterfly.
