Pulau Ubin, MacRitchie, Marina South 18Dec05

On 18 Dec Sun, most of our NSSG members were at different locations in Singapore.

Yamane went to Ubin and he saw Oriental Pied-hornbills, Peregrine Falcon, Black Baza and Straw-headed Bulbuls.

I was at MacRitchie forested trail leading to Sime behind Prunus last night. Seen a leaf frog, 2 species of big spiders, a dwarf gecko, the leaf monkeys were disturbed by our lights, heard the brown hawk, spotted owl (?) and another unknown bird calling. Saw the branded imperial and another large butterfly sleeping. My friend was busy snapping photos. Very spooky and interesting.

Last Sunday I was back at my favourite hideout at Marina South and managed to take a few digishots. The Wanderling Whistling-ducks were drying their feathers after their morning dips (each dive about 15 sec). The one on the left had black & white markings on the flank and the blurry image on the right had that blackish line down hindneck; both features according to the guidebook distinguish it from the Lesser Whisting-duck.

The other shot was a male Asian Koel with red eyes and ivory bill, the blue & grey plumages were quite a sight thru' the scope but my picture didn't do justice to its simple beauty. Obviously I need more practice and learning exposures from better digiscope veterans.
