Singapore Bird Race 17-18Oct09

From KH

This year, Danny, Jia Sheng and I formed the team Drongo to take on the Singapore Bird Race. The difference from previous years is that this is a Green Race, meaning no cars allowed. Our mode of transport was Bus. We were expecting much less birds counted than last few years because we would be covering less locations. However, it turned out that we actually counted 101 bird species! The main reason is that we had to spend more time at each location. All photos during the race taken by JS.

This was the Silver-backed Needletail at the Sg Quarry that made our day.

It was also nice to see the House Swifts at the quarry.

This was the drongo at NTL2 that looked like it had pale underparts in the bin and had us wondering whether it was an Ashy Drongo. However, since we can't confirm its ID, we decided to remove it from our list.

To round off the two-day event, a Yellow-ringed Cat Snake (aka Mangrove Snake) was spotted on a tree in MOE Adventure Centre!

There was also a White-bellied Rat Snake (about 2m) sighted at Dairy Farm, on the way to the quarry. It was trying to cross the path when it saw us and slithered back into the grassy area. It remained in its typically upright posture for some seconds until we walked closer and it disappeared into the undergrowth.
